I am Gyuzal Amanzhanovna Tairova, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, currently undertaking a research internship at the University of Sussex (Brighton, UK) under the international «Bolashak» program.
My research internship focuses on the field of Literature. Conducting research at a leading British university opens up new avenues for professional and academic growth. For me, as a literature specialist, this experience offers not only a chance to deepen my theoretical knowledge but also direct exposure to the contemporary British academic environment, research methodologies, and current trends in literary studies.
The international «Bolashak» scholarship aims to train and enhance the professional qualifications of Kazakhstani specialists at leading foreign educational and research institutions.
During my time in the UK, I have been actively involved in the host university’s academic life, attending research seminars, lectures, discussion forums, and events dedicated to contemporary research in literature, the English language, and teaching methodology.
Participation in international academic events has been a significant part of my internship. These include the UCL EEE Festival of Research in London, University of Sanctuary events in Brighton, and the NATE Conference in Manchester. Engaging in such forums allows me to familiarize myself with modern research practices, exchange experiences with international colleagues, and expand my professional network.
A special feature of the program is the series of literary meetings with contemporary British writers held in various UK cities. These events provide an opportunity to gain firsthand insight into current trends in the literary landscape and to examine literary works not only from a theoretical perspective but also within a broader sociocultural context. As part of my academic training, I am studying contemporary literary theories and methods of comparative analysis in world literature, exploring new pedagogical approaches, and participating in scholarly discussions. Particular emphasis is placed on developing skills in critical thinking, academic argumentation, and the interpretation of literary texts.
The research internship also provides access to the University of Sussex’s modern information resources, library collections, and research materials, enabling a deeper study of specific authors, literary movements, and trends in contemporary world literature.
The knowledge and international academic experience I have gained are also of practical value for my future work at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU). Upon completing the internship, I will be able to integrate new research and pedagogical approaches into the educational process, apply them in my work with students and colleagues, and foster international research collaboration.
The participation of KazNU faculty in international academic and professional development programs helps strengthen the university’s research capacity, expand international ties, and introduce modern approaches to teaching and research. In this context, the Bolashak program serves as a vital tool for professional growth, enabling Kazakhstani specialists to gain experience at foreign universities and research centers and subsequently apply the knowledge they have acquired within the domestic education and research system.
